Manchester United began their premier league campaign with an emphatic 5-1 drubbing of visitors Leeds United in front of their fans at Old Trafford. The game lived up to the billing and saw Portuguese playmaker Bruno Fernandes emerge as the Man of the match, while Frenchman Paul Pogba also put in a stirring display.
I had earlier written that we should not expect a repeat of last season's 6-1 hammering of Leeds United. Hmmm...how wrong I was, as Man United scored four goals in the second half to beat Leeds United 5-1.
A hat-trick from Bruno Fernandes plus efforts from Mason Greenwood and Fred saw United respond perfectly to Ayling’s wonder-strike equaliser. Paul Pogba who has been linked with a move away from the club at the expiration of his contract, starred in the game as he chipped in with four assists - surpassing his assists total from last year in just 60 minutes.
Before the commencement of the match, new French acquisition Raphael Varane was unveiled in front of the Old Trafford faithful, while Englishman Jadon Sancho made his debut in the second half.
Here are the thoughts of Bruno Fernandes: “It was almost the complete game but we conceded. But whatever, we won.”
As for Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa, he said the problems in the game was not from individuals, but a team or 'collective' issue, after he admitted they struggled to get the ball away from the home team. He also praised the performance of Robin Koch, despite the defeat.
