The players, managers, and fans are all looking forward to the start of the new Premier League season. It's been nearly three months since the end of the 2020/21 Premier League season, and fans can't wait to see their favourite clubs and players play again.
Chelsea brought in a lot of players in the transfer window in the summer of 2020, with some immediately making an impact in the team, while others struggled with their form as they found it difficult to quickly adapt to the league.
Despite the fact that Chelsea finished the season as European champions, a few players in the Chelsea squad were labelled as flops, and the players hope to improve on their performances in the new Premier League season.
The new season could be a fresh start for those Chelsea players who didn't fare well in the previous campaign and will do everything they can to improve on their previous season's performance.
This article will look at three Chelsea players who are already showing signs of being a flop in the 2021/22 football season.
Timo Werner
Despite this, Timo Werner finished last season as Chelsea's joint-highest goal scorer across all competitions, contributing a total of 23 goals, the most of any player in the team. He scored 12 goals and assisted on 11 others.
Timo Werner was a consistent goal scorer for Leipzig before joining Chelsea on a £47 million transfer deal last summer. He has failed to maintain his goalscoring form with the blues, which has resulted in him being labelled as a flop.
Timo Werner did not look like a better player in pre-season games this summer, and he may struggle to get back to his best for Chelsea in the 2021/22 season, especially with the addition of Romelu Lukaku.
Callum Hodson-Odoi
So far, Callum Hodson-Odoi has been given a fair chance to prove himself in the Chelsea first team under Thomas Tuchel, but he has failed to seize the opportunity presented to him by the German tactician.
Chelsea manager converted the winger to play at wing back in order to use his speed to help the team in both attacking and defensive duties.
Odoi has not given his best performance for the team as a wing back, and Reece James is regarded as a better option in that position.
The resurgence of Hakim Ziyech may also limit Hodson-opportunities Odoi's to play in a more attacking role.
3. Mateo Kovacic
Ngolo Kante and Jorginho appear to be the two main central midfielders in Thomas Tuchel's starting eleven for the 2021/22 season. Chelsea won the UEFA Super Cup for the second time in 23 years, defeating Villarreal 6-5 on penalties. Tuchel's tactical formation against Villarreal was very different from the one he used in the Champions League final against Manchester City at Estadio Do Dragao in Portugal.
English teams to win the Europa League this year. Villarreal defeated Arsenal and beat Manchester United in the final to win their first European title, while Chelsea kept 9 clean sheets from the group stages to the knockout stages before defeating City in the final to win the Champions League.
Tuchel, the manager of Chelsea, made two errors during the match against Villarreal that could have cost him the trophy.
Hakim Ziyech opened the scoring for the Blues in the 27th minute of the first half, as the game ended in favour of the Blues.
1. Tuchel made a costly mistake by replacing Ngolo Kante with Jorginho in the 65th minute of the second half. Though he wasn't at his best, the Frenchman's presence on the field made a difference for the Blues.
Kante excels at both defensive and counter-attacking football. The yellow submarine increased the pressure on the Blues until they broke through in the 73rd minute, when Gerard Moreno scored to bring Villarreal back into the game.
2. Tuchel made another costly error when he failed to react appropriately to the decision of Rudiger's challenge on Pino, and he was yellow carded by the referee. The Blues manager was fortunate not to be sent off. If Tuchel had been sent off, Villarreal might have won the game. Rudiger was booked for his challenge on Pino, which was most likely a correct decision by the referee.
Kepa Arrizabalaga replaced Edward Mendy with two minutes left in extra time as the Blues prepared for penalties. Kepa was the night's hero, saving two spot-kicks as Chelsea won the UEFA Super Cup.
This is Chelsea's second trophy under Thomas Tuchel, who arrived at Stamford Bridge in January. The Blues manager has done exceptionally well for Chelsea, winning two European titles in the first seven months of his tenure at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea won the UEFA Champions League in May 2021, and the UEFA Super Cup in August 2021.
Kovacis is a fantastic midfielder, but he may play a smaller role this season under Thomas Tuchel.
